Namebench

Maker, craft and shop names

Five generators for people who make, shoot or arrange things by hand. The word lists come from the bench, the studio and the garden, so the names sound like the work.

How to choose a name for a maker business

A maker name often has to outlive the first product. If you start with candles and add soap, a name built on one object boxes you in, while a name built on a place, a feeling or a person's first name stretches. Look at the patterns in each generator: the ones with a shop word at the end, such as studio or goods, are the most flexible.

Selling online changes the rules. Your name will be typed into a marketplace search, cut off in a thumbnail and printed on a label. Short names and names without hard-to-guess spellings do better, which is why every generator can limit the length and pick a starting letter if you want to sit near the top of an alphabetical list.

Handmade buyers like a human behind the name. Patterns that use a first name, such as a first name plus a craft word, make that easy and are worth a look even if you plan to stay anonymous at first.

When you have a shortlist, check it on the marketplace you sell on, on the social networks you plan to use, against your business register and in the trademark register of your country. Do this yourself: no generator can do it for you.
