Naming guide for your food truck

A food truck name is read at walking pace, usually from the side and often in the dark or the rain. It needs a food word in it so a passer-by knows what you serve, and it needs to be short enough to be printed big. Two or three words, no more, is the rule that most working trucks end up following.

Think about how the name will be said. Customers will order by it on the phone, ask for it in a group chat and tag it on a photo. A name that is easy to say and spell travels further than one that needs explaining. Bold names suit a smoky grill menu, punny names suit a menu that does not take itself seriously, and rustic names suit barbecue.

A road word such as curbside or junction says you move. That is a promise, so if you plan to park in one spot all season, a place or food word is more honest. Save a few of each kind in your favourites and see which ones hold up after a day or two.

    Questions

Should the name say what food I sell?

It helps. A food word in the name does the selling for you. If your menu may change, choose a broader word such as grill or kitchen rather than a single dish.

Can I make the name fit the side of a truck?

Use the longest-name filter and the number-of-words filter together. Names of two words up to 14 characters can be printed large across the side of a small truck.

    Will a pun age badly?

Some do. A pun is fun for the first season and can feel tired after. Try the punny style for a shortlist, and say each one aloud to a few people before you pick.

Do the names include real brands?

No. The word lists are common food and road words, and the puns are short phrases written for this list. Still search for the name yourself, since an ordinary phrase may be in use near you.
