This generator draws from 160 hand-picked words in 7 lists and uses 11 naming patterns, plus 5 more that wrap around a keyword you type. The patterns can combine into up to 29,131 different names before filters. Every name in the list shows the pattern behind it, so you can see why it reads the way it does.

    Naming guide for your bookshop

A bookshop name is a quiet promise. It tells a reader what sort of room they will find: crowded and secondhand, bright and curated, a children's corner with beanbags. The describing word does most of that work, and the shop word, books, bookshop or reading room, settles whether it is a place to browse or a place to stay.

Independent shops live on word of mouth and local search, so a name that is easy to say and easy to spell helps. Avoid names that need an explanation, and avoid long names that get cut off on a map listing or a social profile. The longest-name filter exists for this.

If you sell mostly used books, a name that suggests age and wear helps, such as dog-eared, well-thumbed or second. If you sell new releases and events, modern names read cleaner. Puns on book words are the most overused in the trade, so search for the pun near you before you commit.

    Questions

Should I use my own name for a bookshop?

A first name and a shop word, such as Wilfred's Books, make a shop feel personal and are easy to remember. A descriptive name is easier to sell on or hand over.

What about a name for an online-only bookshop?

Short names with no spaces do best online. The blend patterns, such as a page word and a nook word joined together, give single-word names that fit a domain and a handle.

Are the puns in the list original?

They are short phrases written for this list, but book puns are widely used, so the same phrase may be the name of another shop. Check before you commit.

Can I add a genre or a place to the name?

Type the word into the keyword box and the generator builds shop names around it. Genre words such as mystery or poetry work well with the shop words, and a street name makes a local landmark.
