Naming guide for your candle and soap business

Candle and soap labels are small, so the name has to read on a curved jar or a wrapped bar at arm's length. Short names of one or two words work best, and a scent or material word, such as cedar or beeswax, tells a buyer what kind of maker you are before they pick the product up.

Decide if the name is about the product or the feeling. Product names, such as a wick or a lather word, are easy to read and easy to search. Feeling names, a calm or a cosy word, sell a mood and stretch to new products, from room sprays to bath salts, without getting out of date.

Scent words are tempting but they commit you. A name that says lavender suits a lavender line and nothing else. If you plan to rotate scents each season, use the scent as a product name inside the range and keep the brand name wider. The calm and elegant styles lean that way.

    Questions

Can the name include a scent such as lavender or cedar?

Yes, and it reads well on a label, but it ties you to that scent. A wider word such as wick or hearth leaves room to add new scents without a rebrand.

Do I need different names for candles and soap?

Not unless you sell them as separate brands. The shop words in this generator, such as chandlery, soapworks and provisions, say both without naming either.

How do I check that the name is safe to use?

Search for it on the marketplaces and social networks you sell on, in your local business register and in the trademark register of your country. Do the search yourself, since this site cannot do it.

Can I get names that start with one letter?

Yes. The Starts with filter keeps only names whose first letter you choose, ignoring a leading The, which helps if you want to sit near the top of an alphabetical list.
